Sharleen Dziire Dazzles in Ituen Basi, Deola Sagoe, Gavin Rajah and More for Elle South Africa January 2013

Like I always say, it's one thing to have a fantastic idea for a fashion editorial but executing the entire idea is entirely a different deal. Often times, when I find editorials or photos of good art I endeavour to see beyond the pictures and colours, I reason deep into what could have spurred such idea  while also considering the little details around the production; styling, location, model, photography, etc

On my frequent surfing on the internet I stumbled on this fashion editorial featured in the January 2013 edition of South African Elle; the shoot titled Jozi Maboneng features several African designers such as Ituen Basi, Taibo Bacar, Gavin Rajah, Deola Sagoe, Marianne Fassler, and more. I think this is one shoot to commend and pass along, it's beautiful. See more pictures of the shoot below.

Oriental Influences - Ituen Basi at Lagos Fashion and Design Week 2012

Ituen Basi returns to the scene with a big bang. At first glance at this collection my thoughts instantly travelled back to a particular scene in one of my favourite seasonal movies – Sex and the City (SATC) featuring my favourite fashion icon and actress, SJP – Sarah Jessica Parker where she wore the famous Dolce & Gabbana body fitting dress that made incredible impact on the media because of its fabric which was a cut out of top fashion stories on D & G from way back 80’s. While that isn’t exactly the case with Ituen Basi it was a bit similar as Ituen’s choice of fabrics related not just with her stories but other top fashion stories in Nigeria. The strict patterns and cuts on the dresses, skirts and pants created with silk fabrics and laces perfectly matched the tops thus elongating the figure and giving the appearance of precision posture.  The entire collection by Ituen Basi which seemed very practical, bourgeois and very relevant answered my question of how fashion influences art and vice versa. I discovered art definitely relates with the world in general – the accurate way to explore the world, philosophy, politics and even fashion simply through creativity.

The Complete Schedule - Anita Quansah, Iconic Invanity, LDA, JBL, Tiffany Amber, Bridget Awosika, Omer Asim, Ituen Basi and More Set to Show At MTN LFDW 2012!

MTN Lagos Fashion and Design Week which aims to be a premiere fashion event is set to bring together media, industry, buyers and consumers to view the current collections of designers in the fashion capital of Lagos, Nigeria.

This platform aims to cut across geographic and culture barriers to position itself as a business of fashion and design event targeted at showcasing the best of the fashion and design industry, drive the Nigerian fashion economy and ultimately uplift its profile within the industry.

Again this year, Lagos will play host to this fashion and design led event that will feature –

  • runway shows featuring new season collections from the best talents in the fashion industry;
  • design led exhibitions featuring fashion products and accessories, textiles, furniture design, photography, art installations and architecture;
  • workshops that will facilitate knowledge transfer, information exchange and networking opportunities across board

Another major attraction is Lagos itself – a metropolitan island that features an interesting mix of people, cultures which is fast becoming the melting pot for business in Africa. Participants, designers and visitors alike can expect a diversified and interactive platform to maximize their exposure within and beyond their industry circle and open gateways for more business opportunities.

I personally, cannot wait to be a part of this exciting event. See below for the complete schedule of participating designers.
