Hos ‘Afrika Handmade’ : 2-Day Symposium On Contemporary Craft And Design by Craft Africa

Craft Afrika will on 2nd and 3rd October 2014 at the Jacaranda Hotel, Nairobi, convene Afrika Handmade, a 2 day event that will focus on contemporary craft and design produced in Kenya.

Registered as a social enterprise in Kenya, Craft Afrika is involved in creating opportunities that enable viable, dynamic craft and design enterprises. In this regard, Craft Afrika was set up to address gaps in two specific areas: knowledge sharing [including business and technical skills training as well as mentorship] and market development [including market access].

The Afrika Handmade symposium is a strategic activity under Craft Afrika’s market development program, which seeks to create markets for locally produced handmade goods. The objective of the symposium therefore, is to generate visibility for the contemporary craft and design sector, thereby opening up new market opportunities, especially at the domestic and regional level.

This is the first edition of Afrika Handmade.

One of the biggest challenges facing contemporary craft and design entrepreneurs is accessing profitable and sustainable markets. This challenge is caused partly by the fact that a large portion of the potential target market is unaware of the existence of a more innovative genre of craft. Indeed, mention the word ‘craft’ and for most people, the association is with the ‘maasai’ market, often characterised by cheap, mass produced souvenirs and curios.

Roberto Cavalli x Miley Cyrus

Like he did for Beyonce, Cheryl Cole and Spice Girls, Italian designer, Roberto Cavalli will create custom outfits for Miley Cyrus’ upcoming tour; pictures of the first sketch have been released and I love the idea of nude, translucent jumpsuits and playsuits. They are beautiful and daring designs…just the way Miley likes them.

Christian Wijnants Wins International Woolmark Prize 2013

Congratulation to Belgian designer Christian Wijnants who was recently announced winner of the 2013 International Woolmark Prize.

His capsule Merino wool collection was inspired by a single white yarn, exploring its full potential; one type of yarn in 100 percent Merino wool was used to create the seamless garments. A panel of judges including Victoria Beckham, Donatella Versace, Diane von Furstenberg, Franca Sozzani and Tim Blanks, selected Christian from runners up Pankaj & Nidhi (India), Dion Lee (Australia), Sophie Theallet (USA) and Ban Xiao Xue (China). He receives a monetary prize of $100k as well as the opportunity to have the winning collection sold in top boutiques worldwide including Bergdorf Goodman, Harvey Nichols, 10 Corso Como, Joyce and Eickhoff...yay superb!!

Didn't know much about International Woolmark Prize till I visited the website - HERE then I was wow!

Perfect Patterns + Lavishing Layers = Vlisco 'Jeu de Couleurs' Campaign

Honestly, I don’t think I keep up with my personal life as much as I keep up with Vlisco’s always charming campaigns – I mean, why would I have the website bookmarked and also make it on the list of my must check websites in a week?

As in, why not? I love the brand!

Vlisco is an amazing brand that I’m almost sure is occupied with equally brilliant people as the designs created. Yet another stunning campaign – ‘Jeu de Couleurs’ (which I discovered means 'Colours Game') of photos I already in the folder of my laptop’s ‘Screen Saver’, I love the concept, the design and the way maximum control put into the ambiance set for the story. Seriously, nothing like this comes from simple minds, they have a great team – one I wish I could be a part of considering my dear love for fashion and especially campaigns.
                                                                      More photos!

Dynamically Designed Delight : Vlisco Celebrates New Collection With 'Parade of Charm' Campaign

For a while now, Vlisco has been one of few things, brands that's been adding good value to me. Specifically three months going now, Vlisco has been revealing some remarkably chizzy campaigns that deserve big applause.
First, I said it's got to be the stylist, or the creative director or perhaps the brand manager but hey a successful project/brand means a fantastic team - so, to the wonderful team at Vlisco I say, "Great job, please keep it up"!
Frankly, I'd like to say, Vlisco campaigns are fan-ta-bu-lous!!!
Review follows after the break.

All Cut Up - Runway Review of Bridget Awosika's Collection At Lagos Fashion and Design Week 2012

Few designers I anticipated at the show didn’t quite disappoint me, for example Bridget Awosika and Omer Asim couldn’t have anticipated what happened. It was one thing both shows followed each other accordingly it was another thing – not good of course – considering the two designers share the same design aesthetics which was clearly revealed in their collection. I think this was a big miss on the organizers side – or not. But for future reasons some shows should just not follow each other e.g. Bridget Awosika and Omer Asim same way Celine will not be before or after Stella McCartney.

Aside from this misses, both designers’ collection were remarkable; while Bridget Awosika inculcated lots of clean, easy wraps, precise layering and slits that again confirmed the brand’s versatility and sexiness.
