Introducing: LICORICE - Ghana Fashion and Design Week 2012 London Campaign

Ghana Fashion & Design Week reveals its 2012 London Campaign on Vogue Black Italia featuring the KORLEKIE collection by Ghanaian-British Designer Beatrice Korlekie Newman in collaboration with Brazilian Shoe label, Studio TMLS. Exclusively released by Luxury publication Vogue Black Italia to mark the contribution of Ghanaian talents in the fashion and creative industry, a collaboration of forward thinking creative individuals teamed up to realize the vision behind the GFDW 2012 campaign photo shoot, themed – LICORICE, commonly know to be “Black” and “Sweet”, taken from the root of the natural legume plant that is native to southern Europe and parts of Asia, meaning “ Sweet Root”. Inspiration for creative direction taken both from their Ghanaian and British roots, envisioned by Daryl Rita Osekreh projects a unique combination of avant-garde meets culture look with an exaggerative size Bantu Knot hair styles perfected by stylist Sonia Wong. A glamorous dark look depicting the black liquorish colour for both make-up and nails is strongly projected by celebrity make-up artist Claire De Graft and Nail Technician Pebbles Aikens, juxtaposed against a sombre background of vintage English décor. The shoot features Ghanaian/UK models Soraya Akua Khalil who was the face of Italian clothing brand Benetton for its 2010 It’s My Time campaign, and upcoming model Phyllis Tekyi-Berto.
The Korlekie brand quickly becoming a favourite of celebrities including Alesha Dixon, Shingai Shoniwa, Rita Ora, Sabrina Washignton exudes avant-garde glamour, luxury, intricate craftsmanship and sophistication. Defining a fresh and unique approach that represents her African roots in her collection through weaving, knitting, and fringing of various types of fabrics including leather. Beatrice’s signature look consists of heavy embellishment, beading and intricate handwork that is inspired by her Afro-European background/culture, and takes inspiration from the beautiful beading and embroidery of African clothes and lace fabrics. Models are styled from a selection of Korlekie’s intricately knitted garments, knitted leather jacket with cowl trousers and fitted jacket made in fine Bazin riche brocade fabrics from Mali.
