DOVETAIL by Orange Culture

Orange Culture presents DOVETAIL collection inspired by uneven and unlevelled wooden staircases in Lagos Nigeria.

The imperfection of staircases in Lagos Nigeria doesn’t necessarily take away from its beauty as the imperfect lines, joints and dimensions make each step an exciting adventure, a step into an airy discovery. These staircases have a rustic appearance that reinterprets the natural structure of wood and inspired the prints developed for the collection.

The collection is filled with oversized “Agbada” Tunic, Wrapper Skirts, roped loose pants, sheer shirts, as well as some new shapes as the brand continues to push the boundaries on traditional African Menswear.

Elle.com on LFDW 2013 - 7 Designers to Watch From Lagos' Emerging Fashion Scene

Via elle.com

From Maki Oh, Jewel by Lisa, ROF, Tsemaye Binitie, Tiffany Amber to Orange Culture and Samson Soboye, TANWI NANDINI ISLAM profiles seven (7) Nigerian designers to watch.

Excerpt:

Lagos, Nigeria’s cultural capital and city of 21 million people, might not be the most obvious site for a runway show, let alone a week devoted to fashion. The city is known for its oil reserves, sure, but fashion? Increasingly, the answer is yes.

Last month, Lagos played host to the 3rd Annual Lagos Fashion and Design Week, a four-day, beachside affair showcasing Nigeria’s brightest designers.

RUNWAY REPORT : LFDW 2013 - Orange Culture

The collection is fantastic! It's a tale of what's good for goose is good for the gander. Orange Culture again reminded us of his brave style of mixing simple plan pattern, print with strong and 'weird' materials to produce an outstanding collection that one part wowed some and on the other part dismayed.

From short and long shirt hemlines, nomadic headpieces to the white sneakers Orange Culture defined the real African nomadic aesthetics while predicting the future with the linen/net emphasis.

One thing the designer, Adebayo Oke-Lawal is also known for is his great sense of music; for him the runway music should be as fabulous as the collection...and did he do that? He brought it full on, quite amazing.

"The Feeling" isn't Exactly Mutual...

Except Orange Culture's F/W '13 collection is about breaking boundaries *which I'd really love* then there're few tailoring ethics that shouldn't be in this collection. While I totally get the idea of mix-matching, layering, contrasting etc here, I believe there should be a limit to standards - perfect layering isn't over-layering.

Layer, mix-match, pull-over, disguise and do every thing (editorial or styling) to pieces but please don't over emphasize points that should speak themselves ..the right people (the fashion/style conscious and experienced in this light) understand you, so personally I don't think a designer or stylist at that should put too much effort in emphasizing the obvious. It somehow speaks weakness.

This collection is brilliant, the styling is nice but overly emphasized in some areas, tailoring as said earlier will pass if the idea was to break boundaries.
I love the conjunction of art, patterns and all...very creative.

LOOKBOOK: "Quirks Invasion" by Orange Culture

Shot by amazingly talented 17 year old Temi Adebayo, the Collection is built on the life of a quirky artistic young African traveler who makes every holiday experience a style invasion.

He takes us through his holiday with clothes that portray a sense of his background without being too much of a cliché. His African history mixed with his well travelled background inspire the quirky looks that take him from a fun hot summer’s day in palm springs to a cold fashionable summer night on a yacht heading to another one of his many invasions.
