The Life House Presents 'CITY OF GOD' Film

Chika Anadu, whose short films where shown at the Reel Life film night at the end of March can be heard on Smooth 98.1FM this Saturday 16th April 2011 from 9am to 10am. This is an opportunity to hear more about this upcoming film maker from her own lips! Chika met Smooth FM veejay Aderonke, after the screening of her short films, while lounging outdoors at the Life House.

So....with out further delay, here's presenting to you the next Reel Life film; a truly important film (in a social context) that is nothing short of AMAZING.

Reel Life promises to share with you globally acclaimed film, CITY OF GOD

CITY OF GOD
City of God is a 2002 Brazilian crime film directed by Fernando Meirelles and co-directed by Kátia Lund, released in its home country in 2002 and worldwide in 2003. All the characters existed in reality.

The story is based on real events. It was adapted by Bráulio Mantovani from the 1997 novel of the same name written by Paulo Lins.
It depicts the growth of organized crime in the Cidade de Deus suburb of Rio de Janeiro, between the end of the '60s and the beginning of the '80s, with the closure of the film depicting the war between the drug dealer Li'l Zé and criminal Knockout Ned. The tagline is "If you run the beast catches, if you stay the beast eats."

The streets of the world's most notorious slum, Rio de Janeiro's City of God' are a place where combat photographers fear to tread, police rarely go and residents are lucky to live to the age of 20. In the midst of the oppressive crime and violence, a frail and scared young boy will grow up to discover that he can view the harsh realities of his surroundings with a different eye; the eye of an artist. In the face of impossible odds, his brave ambition to become a professional photographer becomes a window into his world and ultimately his way out.

Celebrated with international acclaim, this powerful true story of crime and redemption won numerous awards including the Amercian Film Institute's Audience Award and the Visions Award at the Toronto International Film Festival. The film also received four Academy Award nominations in 2004: Best Cinematography (César Charlone), Best Directing (Meirelles), Best Editing (Daniel Rezende) and Best Writing (Adapted Screenplay) (Mantovani). Before that, in 2003 it had been chosen to be Brazil's runner for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, but it was not nominated to be one of the five finalists.

The cast includes Alexandre Rodrigues, Leandro Firmino da Hora, Jonathan Haagensen, Douglas Silva, Alice Braga and Seu Jorge. Most of the actors were, in fact, residents of favelas such as Vidigal and the Cidade de Deus itself.
